I was inspired by a play for kids that we'll be seeing this weekend called Under the Baobab Tree. It's a collaboration between a local Singaporean kids theater and a Scottish African storytelling company. It's not every day that you find good African-inspired cultural events for kids in Singapore, so I thought this was a great opportunity to seize.
Here's the plan for this month's trip. The reading will be ongoing and the other activities we will do throughout the month, posting about them as we go.
Reading: Our 5 kids books and 1 grown-up book are picked and in hand.
Field Tripping: Under the Baobab Tree play and the zoo
Cooking: Peanut soup, ugali (cornmeal porridge) and pancakes, with a recipe from Mama Panya's Pancakes (one of our books)
Making Music: Masai drumming and rhythm
Crafting: Collage, animal puppets, baobab tree painting, a safari sheet, drum making, and fabric collage card
Giving Back: We'll donate to the Green Belt Movement, the organization of Wangari Maathai that we've been reading about in our books.
We're packed and ready to go! Here's some photos of Kenya, courtesy of National Geographic, to get us excited for the trip:
